See (See), when you’re gone, I’ll still be Bloody Mary She won’t cry, she says, as a martyr who already accepted her destiny, glad to die for what she believes most. Ferdinand Dejean (1731-1797) was a surgeon, working for the Dutch East India Company and later became a rather wealthy physician. Mozart's four flute quartets are perhaps the most notable, at least in regards to the classical era compositions for the ensemble. ![]() This was an ensemble that was composed for often in the 18th century. However, this orchestration allowed for a more playful interchange between the flutists and the violinist, as their two timbres were markedly different. In a sense, it was a string quartet, where a flute subbed out for one of the violins. However, in Mozart's time, a flute quartet was more traditionally a flute, violin, viola, and cello. This type of quartet stems from the vast, but recent flute choir tradition. You may be familiar with the term flute quartet as it relates to works arranged for four flute, or two flutes, an alto flute, and a bass flute. However, with regard to the flute quartet, Mozart pinned four separate works: Mozart's contribution to the flute repertoire, while minimal, was significant most notably, his two concerti for flute and orchestra. ![]() ![]() I hope this helps, and gives you the confidence to try it out. There was nothing that stood out in his game, but there was nothing that showed he was overwhelmed either. Reunanen played four games with the Rangers last year, recording an assist and playing replacement level defensive hockey. This is simply other players passing him on the depth charts. Meanwhile, the University of Minnesota recently seriously considered a policy that would mandate all students and staff use transgender pronouns. A religious student group at the University of Iowa dared require their student leaders to affirm Christian values - and had their official status revoked. This type of frightening infringement on First Amendment rights happens all the time in our system of higher education. The collapse of religious and intellectual tolerance at public colleges is not just alarming as an infringement of student rights - it’s wreaking havoc on our entire higher education system.Īfter all, Chow’s campus lynching isn’t some isolated incident at one college. No one deserves to have her life turned upside down for respectfully expressing her religious beliefs or politically conservative opinions. ![]() No matter your personal views on the Trump administration’s proposal, you should sympathize with Chow. If you don’t agree, you can’t expose yourself in a culture like this.” Chow lamented the grim reality on campus: “People who don’t agree with the majority opinion are afraid to comment. Still, she has no intention of resigning. Now, she is a pariah on campus and in the student senate. Chow always knew her view was going to be unpopular, but had hoped fellow students would accept her religious beliefs and respect her as a person. She expressed fear for her safety, worried that the harassment might rise to the next level. When I spoke with Chow about what she’s going through, she was understandably shaken up. Berkeley College Republicans President Matt Ronnau told me conservative students feel silenced and harassed on campus, and that “this culminates in a culture where we’re unable to speak our minds in class.” It’s not hard to see why he feels this way, after a left-wing student mob tried to decimate Chow simply for speaking out. My conversations with Berkeley students made it clear just how chilling the threat of left-wing extremism can be to intellectual diversity. Anyone who values free thought, a culture of mutual tolerance, or First Amendment rights has cause for alarm. But Christians aren’t the only group who ought to be concerned by this outrageous campus mobbing. The editorial board of UC Berkeley’s student paper, The Daily Californian, wrote that “Chow’s language erased and dehumanized individuals” and called her actions a “disturbing invalidation of human beings.” Now, activists are also trying to use the text of the student senate constitution, which prohibits senators from “participation in or endorsement of activities that disadvantage any marginalized identity,” to justify Chow’s removal from office.Īpparently, they view being Christian as an assault on LGBT people. Even now, they’re considering pursuit of a recall petition if demands for her resignation are unsuccessful.Ĭhow has since been maligned as homophobic, transphobic, and bigoted by countless members of the campus. The QARC deemed Chow’s actions “harmful” and “antithetical” to the values of the campus. It’s already received more than 1,000 signatures. The “Queer Alliance Resource Center” at UC Berkeley followed suit, circulating a petition demanding her resignation from the student senate. ![]() Student Action, Chow’s political party on campus, immediately disavowed her. What followed was an all-out assault on freedom of conscience. Yet this modest invocation of religious belief was enough to put Chow in the crosshairs of the campus mob. Chow read a statement making it clear that while she views discrimination and harassment as unacceptable, she could not support a resolution that did not align with her deeply held Christian beliefs about the sexes. Results: Figure 2 shows some snapshots of two simulations of a 96 km diameter projectile impacting Ceres at 4 km s − 1 : one with a serpentine core (left hand side) and one with a dunite core (right hand side). ![]() Crater scaling for icy targets suggests that to form a final crater ∼ 700 km in diameter, a projectile composed of ice around one tenth the diameter of Ceres is required to impact at 4 km s − 1 (a typical impact velocity on Ceres ). A gravity field was assigned at the start of the calculation and, due to the large mass difference between the impactor and Ceres, was not updated during the calculation. Material was weakened after impact using the block model of acoustic fluidization. The silicate cores were assigned strength using the model described in, with parameters for dunite taken from the ice mantles were assigned strength using the model developed for icy satellites. iSALE was used in its 2D, axisymmetric formulation to reduce computational costs (thus impos- ing a normal incidence impact angle), although full 3D simulations are ongoing. A computational cell size of ∼ 3 km was used, which means that Ceres was represented by 160 cells across its radius. ![]() The size of the cores was calculated to give a mass, surface gravity and bulk density consistent with those estimated for Ceres. Impact modelling: The iSALE shock physics code was used to simulate impacts into different pos- sible internal structures for Ceres: (a) a dry silicate core with a radius of 369 km (using the ANEOS equation of state for dunite ) capped by an ice mantle (ANEOS equation of state for water), and (b) a hydrated silicate core of radius 426 km (using the ANEOS equation of state for serpentine ) capped by an ice mantle. in which the core will play a role during the opening of the transient crater, or the curvature of the surface is significant), further modelling is required. For small craters which form entirely in the ice mantle, this estimate is robust, but for larger craters (e.g. The model predicts around two craters larger than ∼ 700 km diameter. Figure 1 shows an estimate of the number of craters formed on Ceres using the crater scaling parameters for ice from. The expected number of craters on Ceres today will also be dependent on the internal structure, as crater relax- ation, especially near the equator, could remove evidence of craters > 4 km if they form in an ice layer. Over the same time period, on average Ceres would experience 3 impacts by objects one-twentieth its size (48 km), and have 1.3 impacts by objects one-tenth of its size (96 km). Over the course of solar system history, Ceres could expect over 63000 impacts of impactors 300 m in diameter or larger. The disruption threshold for Ceres was set using the criteria from, although after 10 4 simulations of Ceres’ impact history, no disruptive impacts occurred. The size- and velocity frequency distribution of impactors in the aster- oid belt were estimated using dynamical and collisional evolution models of terrestrial planet formation and as predicted for Ceres. ![]() Predicting impactor sizes: Using the statistical framework presented in, the number, sizes and velocities of impacts on Ceres were estimated. Here, we use a statistical model to predict the largest impacts expected on Ceres through solar system history, and explore how crater morphologies for such impacts vary with internal structure. With NASA’s Dawn due to enter orbit around Ceres soon, we will start receiving the first images of craters on the surface, which can be used to infer the nature of Ceres’ interior. These different structures will lead to different impact crater morphologies. Several different structures have been proposed, but the most prominent in the literature include either a dry or hydrated silicate core with an icy mantle. The internal structure of Ceres is un- known. ![]() |
